Find and fix broken shortcuts

What does this tool do for me?

Windows has an excellent feature called shortcuts. Shortcuts are "links" to files and documents stored in other places on your system. Your Windows Start Menu is comprised of shortcuts pointing to various files elsewhere on your hard drive(s). Double-clicking a shortcut automatically opens its corresponding application or document. Often times, however, the "targets" of these shortcuts are moved or deleted, leaving the shortcut pointing to a file or location that no longer exists.

These orphaned shortcuts can be confusing when they don’t operate properly and can clutter your system as  unnecessary "orphaned" links. Ensembles for Windows provides you with a convenient way to deal with these orphaned files by scanning your system for them, and then optionally looking for the files that they used to link to.

If the previously linked to file still exists on your system you can automatically update the shortcut with the new information -otherwise you can remove it from your system thereby freeing the space and eliminating the clutter.

You'll be fast on your way to a clutter-free system with these great features:

A Snap to Use
Ensembles Shortcut tool is easy to use  Simply select the drives you want to scan and go - that's it!  It looks at all of the shortcuts on the selected drives and reports any information to you.  After it's done scanning you can easily fix or remove shortcuts with the click of a button!

FIXES Shortcuts - Doesn't Just Remove Them
It's almost as bad to remove a shortcut that could be easily fixed as it is to have them in the first place.  That's why Ensembles has a comprehensive search mechanism that matches up the original target - wherever it may be - with the invalid shortcut.  Once the original target is found (or a new one is chosen) the shortcut is automatically repaired, restoring it to fill operation instantly.

Clean Up that Start Menu of Yours!
If you're like most people, after a while your Start Menu begins to look like a disaster area  Programs you installed months or years ago may no longer be on your system - but they'll still occupy ugly space on your Start Menu!  The Shortcut Tool allows you to do a quick scan-and-fix of your Start Menu -- removing or fixing all of the invalid links that end up on everyone's system over time.  You can even have it automatically remove program groups that are empty of valid links (no more menus that extend half-way across your screen when you click "Start->Programs").

Flexible and Safe Removal
As in all applicable Ensembles tools, we provide you with flexible, safe ways to remove the items you choose.   Here's a quick rundown:

  • Move shortcuts to the recycle bin:   When you move shortcuts to the Windows recycle bin you can easily restore them back to wherever they came from.  This is a great way to remove files if you want to be extra cautious.
  • Move shortcuts to a specific location:   If you don't necessarily want to totally delete the shortcuts that are found you can simply move them to a separate folder (maybe a backup disk or other removable media).   This gives you the ability to retain any shortcuts that are removed should you feel you may need them in the future.
  • Permanently delete shortcuts:  Of course, you can choose to permanently delete shortcuts that are found freeing the space that they occupy immediately!
